National Liberty Ship S.S. Jeremiah O’Brien

Included admission with the Go San Francisco Card

National Liberty Ship SS Jeremiah OBrien Liberty ships were built to be the workhorses of WWII. They carried cargoes of mail, grain, ammunition, troops, and more.

Today, only two of the 2,710 Liberty ships built during the war survive and the S.S. Jeremiah O’Brien is one of them. Built in South Portland, Maine in 1943, and named after a Maine native who led the first Naval battle of the American Revolution, it is the only ship that participated in the Normandy invasion and it returned 50 years later to take part in the 50th anniversary of D-day. Virtually the entire ship from engine room to flying bridge can be seen by visitors. Boilers are “lit off,” and the 2500-horsepower, triple-expansion reciprocating steam main engine is operated on “Steaming Weekends” (normally the third Saturday and Sunday of each month) so visitors can see the engine plant in action.
