Travel-Friendly Gifts

December 12th, 2007 by susan j

If you’re buying gifts this time of year, then don’t make the mistake I made and purchase a fancy set of lotions and gels for friends across the country! Though I remembered not to wrap the the gifts in my carry-on, the TSA security personnel were not as impressed with the festive holiday scents as I was. Ah, well, live and learn…

Condé Nast Traveler recently published their holiday gift guide, which features ideas like patent leather passport covers (perfect for the fashionista with a taste for world travel) and noise-canceling headphones (great for long flights with squirming children). You can even suggest your own gift ideas here.

The Washington Post also has some great gifts ideas for all the travelers on your list, including paper shampoo or soap from Flight 001. These cute little packages include 30 single-use sheets and are approved for carrying on domestic flights, so all you have to do is add water (a much smarter travel gift than holiday scented lotions - I certainly won’t make that mistake twice!).

The Go San Francisco Card also makes a great gift, because it’s portable, flexible, and convenient so your gift recipient can choose when and where to use the card. Plus, selected cards are 20% off from now until December 20 - just in time for the holidays!

Free Drinks in San Francisco

December 5th, 2007 by susan j

Photo uploaded by ginsnob

I was enjoying a free piece of cake at a post-performance reception recently when my younger brother (just on the cusp of celebrating the big 2-1) remarked that “man, I love free food! But once I graduate college, I guess I’ll have to buy my own.”

One of our older companions reassured him, saying “you can enjoy free food and drinks well into your thirties, trust me.” Little brother is not quite old enough to (legally) appreciate free alcohol, so when my colleague Shannon B. passed along the link to MyOpenBar, I figured I would pass it along to all of you loyal blog readers and intrepid travelers.

With editions for San Francisco, New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles, MyOpenBar seeks out the best open bars from coast to coast and posts the details seven days a week, so you’ll never have to shell out for beer or cocktails again. Unless, of course, you want to. Cheers!

If you’re among the 27+ million people who plan to fly this Thanksgiving, then you’ll want to read Peter Greenberg’s last-minute travel tips. Greenberg is a Today Show contributor who reminds travelers to check in online the night before and try to fly out of a smaller airport to avoid travel congestion (good tips for other times of the year, too). To relieve airplane gridlock, President Bush  recently approved a “Thanksgiving express lane” from Florida to New England and added additional measures to avoid delays. Happy travels!

San Francisco’s Best of Broadway series presents The Color Purple, a musical based on the popular Alice Walker novel.

October 19-December 8
Actors Theatre of San Francisco brings Tennesssee Williams’ Camino Real to the stage.

November 8-December 2
Berkeley Playhouse journeys to Whoville with Seussical the Musical.

November 23-December 16
42nd Street Moon introduces audiences to Jerome Kern and P.G. Wodehouse’s little known musical Oh, Lady! Lady!!

December 5-23
American Conversatory Theater presents the classic holiday spectacle A Christmas Carol.

December 1-January 12
The San Francisco Playhouse takes a quirky look at Christmas with the Sna Francisco premiere of Christopher Durang’s Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge!
