Tips on Traveling with Toiletries

Since I’m eagerly anticipating a vacation later this week, this article over at Less than a Shoestring caught my eye. In it, a veteran traveler and blogger discusses ways to get around the TSA’s limit on liquids by using bar soap, solid shampoos, and other goodies in place of liquids. It sounds like a good idea, but I’m a little skeptical of washing my hair with something that’s shaped like a bar of soap. Anyone tried it? Leave a comment and let us know!

    Hey, thanks for the citation!

The folks at Lush give the following reasoning for solid shampoo: “Whenever we can, we turn our products solid. Solid shampoo needs no preservatives (no water to go off), requires no packaging and lasts for ages. You can take just one bar on holiday and wash your body and clothes with it too! Keep yours dry between washes and you’ll be bored with it before it runs out.”

Pick out a bar and check out the extensive customer reviews directly at the Lush site. You can get a sense of how others use them and which scents they do/don’t recommend.

If you give it a try, promise you’ll report back on how it went!

I’ve used solid shampoo for years, and it’s great - Lush’s bars are really nice (I don’t work for them, honest!), and you can keep the bar in a plastic dish so your wash bag doesn’t get all gunked up if you’re on the go constantly. You just lather up the bar between your hands and use the suds as you would normal shampoo - very convenient and I have lovely soft swishy hair still despite dying it, so it can’t be too bad for it :D

Today I stumbled onto two other posts on this topic at Wisebread: Extreme Green: Save Travel Stress and the Planet with Solid Shampoo! and Extreme Green: Part Two of My Quest for Solid Hair Care Products.

For the crafty, Beth at Fake Plastic Fish offers up a recipe to make your own solid lotion.

I second and third the advocates for solid shampoo. I’ve used various brands since giving up plastic packaging of all kinds last year. (My blog is all about my quest to reduce my plastic waste and plastic comsumption) Right now, I’m using Burt’s Bees solid rosemary mint shampoo bar that comes in a cardboard box.

Why pay for water to be packaged and shipped when solids work just as well and are much more energy efficient?
