October in Northern California is the best time to explore the coast and city that is often shrouded in a blanket of fog during the summer months. Surprisingly, a San Francisco day in autumn can oftentimes be warmer and sunnier than in the middle of July. There are several events that will bring you to the waterfront this fall, enjoying the cloudless sky and fresh ocean breeze. Here are some of our picks:

San Francisco’s Fleet Week October 4-9 takes to the sea and sky as a parade of navy ships invades the bay and Blue Angels streak the sky in an exciting air show. You can catch the week-long action along the Embarcadero and Fisherman’s Wharf, conveniently located near the city’s famed Ghirardelli Chocolate Factory. Get a taste of chocolate-coated history as you sample sinful sundaes and learn how the famous chocolate was first made.

Wine lovers should not miss the annual Sonoma County Harvest, Fall Sensations October 5-7. The fair celebrates the area’s world renowned agricultural tradition with more than 500 award-winning wines, fresh local produce, and tastes of drool-worthy cuisine prepared by famed California chefs. All the taste-tempting wine and delicious food may inspire you to visit a few local wineries. Enjoy guided tours of the intoxicating Simi Winery or experience another world with the Mediterranean inspired ambiance of Sonoma Enoteca.

The Bay Area Discovery Museum is one-of-a-kind, attracting adults and kids of all ages with its interactive exploration of the unique native environment. It is a favorite among locals with kids as it excites kids and is anything but boring to adults. Not only does the museum offer an up-close look at tide pools and a model of the golden gate bridge-turned playground, as well as many other kid and adult-friendly attractions, but the waterfront location in the Marin headlands offers a unique view of the bay. Enjoy the refreshing aroma of the native bay trees and ocean spray and take in the panoramic view that blends the rolling hills, dramatic cliffs, San Francisco skyline, and an under-belly glimpse of the bridge. The month of October offers even more reason to visit the museum as it celebrates the harvest season and gets ready for Halloween. Between October 6 and 27, kids can bring old clothes to make their very own scarecrow. And don’t miss the two day Goblin Jamboree Fundraiser October 20 and 21 when kids and parents can explore a haunted version of the museum in their costumes.

Music lovers visiting San Francisco in October luck out as the 25th Annual San Francisco Jazz Festival promises to produce the biggest appreciation of jazz legends and upcoming artists possibly in the world. Tickets are now available at a variety of premier venues around the bay area, featuring classical and contemporary jazz. Or you can broaden your jazz knowledge and appreciation with seminars about the artists and history of jazz.
